Hey,
My name is Alexandra Victoria Asbury, and I’m a committed public interest activist. Living in Olympia, Washington, I’ve spent years championing the rights of marginalized disabled persons. A graduate of Evergreen State College, I played a key role in securing critical protections for the Washington Department of Natural Resources personnel with disabilities. My work has focused on advocating for accessibility, acceptance and improving quality of life. Every project I take on through my company Pepper Potts Consulting, PLLC is driven by the belief that everyone deserves dignity and fair treatment. I have also founded Dancing With My Chair, a non-profit organization that provides seated dance-themed exercise classes for everyone.

My Talks

Signature Topics
I Wanna Play, Too!
In this talk, we discuss how to discover and use “play” by tapping to our inner child to overcome feeling self-conscious about disabilities, be it physical or invisible. “Play” enables everyone to celebrate, take personal ownership and responsibility for the differences that make us unique and special, individually. This approach to life enables everyone to discover and offer our special abilities to improve personal interactions throughout society by engaging with others through PLAY!
Why Wheelchairs Can’t Fly
In this talk, we discuss the difficulties wheelchair users frequently experience when trying to travel aboard an aircraft. My personal experience, along with those of many of my follow power wheelchair users has forced us to discover the need for attention and advocacy to be brought to this accessibility barrier. The Federal Transportation Commission does not fairly represent nor treat this issue compassionately. The airline’s best interests are given priority over the disabled. The issue has become so egregious that most wheelchair users fear flying. Being de-boarded by an ADA Cargo Specialist is humiliating. A colleague of mine has had a similar negative experience. Complaints filled with both the FTC and the airlines are fruitless. Many have suffered trauma and are trapped being limited to travel in our wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Learn How to Vet and Advocate Medical Providers That “Get” You
Out of desperation to find trustworthy caregivers and medical providers, it can be hard to navigate what the best methods are to ensure vulnerable people find the right “fit” to suit their specific needs. Being “too nice” doesn’t always provide the desired result in searching for a reliable and compassionate caregiver. It is important to recognize that you are the client! It’s okay to ask questions and trust your instincts. Don’t settle for someone who may potentially cause you more harm than good. You can fire nurses, doctors, and caregivers who don’t treat you with respect. Consider if they were in your situation, how would they expect to be cared for and treated? “Do unto others, as…” Some caregivers may take advantage of you and your vulnerability. Speak your truth respectfully, directly and most importantly genuinely. Failing to use your words effectively to advocate for yourself and others can end up with a backlash that leaves you with more damage to your well-being than the care and regard for self-respect that you were hoping for!

My Story
Accident
At the age of nineteen, as a burgeoning ballet dancer at the beginning of a professional career, I broke my neck in a roll-over car accident in Oregon. I was en route to Salt Lake City to perform the lead role in the ballet Carmen. The injuries I sustained left me an incomplete quadriplegic. That was the end of my dance career and the start of the most challenging journey of my life.
Education
I received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Economy and Social Change from Evergreen State College in 1991. I have also made significant progress toward a Masters of Public Administration at the same.
Expertise
I have extensive knowledge of state and local government agency organizations and operations gained from working as the sole Administrative Assistant and Project Specialist for the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Police Chief for a period of ten years.
